The Eisenwerk Würth GmbH is implementing a pioneering transformation project at its Bad Friedrichshall site aimed at fully decarbonizing its energy-intensive production of cast iron abrasive media. For cast iron abrasive media, cast iron is melted down and processed into small, extremely hard particles. These particles are later propelled at high speed onto surfaces to clean or roughen them—a process known as “blasting.” The aim of the project is to completely replace the cupola furnace currently powered by fossil fuels and replace it with an innovative, digitally controlled induction furnace system. Combined with electricity sourced from climate-neutral sources, this will achieve a 100% reduction in CO₂ emissions. At the same time, energy consumption will be significantly reduced compared with the existing system.
